History
Overview 80 Years of Service: The Honored 80 1928-1969 History and Projects 1970-2007 History and Projects  

1970: The JLB begins the 1970’s by sponsoring the Boise School Volunteers.

1971: The JLB sponsored day care services for mentally handicapped children, continued to volunteer in the Boise schools, and worked as docents at the Art Gallery.

1972: The Art in the Community program is stepped up and the JLB
               continues to volunteer in helping with visual aids for the blind.

1973: The JLB hosts a pottery workshop for 5th graders and
         maintains a "Homermakers Services”
program. 

1974: The popular marionette program incorporates a segment known as “Historic
Prevention.”

1975: The Children’s Zoo opens, and the JLB assists families in which at least one
parent is incarcerated.
 

1976: The JLB begins research into child advocacy and continues to raise

awareness in the Treasure Valley about the foster care system. 

1978: Volunteer Career Development is a focus of the JLB, as is a family support program.

1979: The JLB participates in programs to educate the public on the effects of
alcohol abuse, and sponsors the “Old House Workshop” on the restoration
of some of Boise’s beautiful older homes.
 

1980: Crime prevention, the family advocate program and alcohol education top the

issues that the JLB tackles. 

1981: The Guardian ad Litem program begins with substantial assistance from the JLB, and the JLB founds Parents & Youth Against Drug Abuse (PAYADA). 

1982: In addition to maintaining programs that addressed crime prevention, energy & air concerns and drug and alcohol abuse, Leaguers had time for some fun in testing recipes for a fundraising cookbook. 

1985: The JLB evaluates a center to celebrate the sciences and focuses on child protection issues. 

1986: The Ronald McDonald House is opened. 

1988: The Discovery Center of Idaho and Families in Formation are presented to the Treasure Valley community. 

1989: The JLB hosts a Renaissance Faire. 

1990: The Literacy Lab (now Learning Lab) opens to help enhance the literacy skills of under-educated families and adults. 

1991: The JLB continues its work with the Literacy Lab.

1992: Even more organizations in the Treasure Valley benefit from the training of JLB’ers with the advent of the Impact Boise program. The JLB also hosts a Wold Affairs Dinner.

1993: Area Junior Leaguers provide childcare for the homeless at Community House. 

1994:  Helping Treasure Valley adults and family in improving their literacy level and providing childcare to the homeless at the Community House remain priorities for the JLB.

1995: The JLB sponsors the Anne Frank Exhibit.

1996: Impact Boise projects bring the JLB together as they work throughout the
community.
 

1997:  The beginnings of 2-1-1 Idaho are seen, in a JLB project called “InfoLinks.” 

1998: The JLB continues the development of InfoLinks and brightens many children’s holidays with Santa Sacks. 

1999:  Seeing a need to reinforce with every young woman that she is a bright, wonderful member of our community, the Self Esteem for Young Women program is developed. 

2000: The Mentoring Institute, a collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Idaho, is founded. 

2001: Continuing its groundbreaking work in mentoring and providing self esteem

classes remains the focus of the JLB. 

2002: The Self Esteem for Young Women program is renamed Especially Me! 

2003: 2-1-1 Idaho extends to Eastern and Northern Idaho. 

2004: The AJLI bestows two “JL” awards on the JLB for its 2-1-1 Idaho program as well as its New Member Training program.


2005: The JLB proudly debuts the Bridge Homes for Children project, in partnership with the Children’s Home Society of Idaho.


2007: The JLB channels signature platform focus on helping children and families in Foster Care.
